MAATA is a well-known Moscow band, whose music can be simply described as warm, strong, inspiring, peaceful, beautiful, bright, free, alive, thin, astringent.
Orchestra section, two drums, guitar that brings everything together and the deep voice crowning it all – that is the sound of MAATA. Despite the impressive structure of 8 man, band's music is full of improvisation and spontaneity.
Lead vocalist Olga Milchenko and guitarist Alexei Viguro founded MAATA in early 2011, full of energy, they were working hard on improvisation with different genres and musicians. Group's debut album SJO (live) was released in January 2012. Now the band includes 8 musicians and features more than 20 instruments: Alexei Viguro – guitar, Olga Milchenko – vocal, glockenspiel; Sergei Rakitin – violin, guitar; Olga Kirianova – cello; Danila Lukianov – clarinet, piano; Kirill Osherov – tonbak, cajon; Andrew Tanzu – frame drums; Lilia Shaman Borisenko - didgeridoo, percussion instruments, corrugated pipes etc. Ekaterina Saprina, the band's director, said ’’MAATA is a strong and free eclectic soul of contemporary Russian music, a mix of European instrumental fusion music with a flavor of jazz and Eastern aesthetics”.
The Moscow Eclectic Chamber Orchestra MAATA plays music that sounds unlike anything else, using the most unexpected combinations of instruments. The exotic percussion, glockenspiel, noise of corrugated pipes, didgeridoo and strong voice in one crescendo merges with clarinet, solo piano and classical string section, including guitar, violin and cello. The breath, filling every song of MAATA creates an amazing atmosphere full of creativity and expression. In each set musicians try to destroy their own frames of style and habits, not forgetting to create a bright, catchy melodies and powerful rhythms.
